Monday, Leap Day! Feb 29

Monday, Feb, 29 2016

Yes, today is LEAP DAY.  Why do we have an extra day in Feb every 4 years? According to The Telegraph, (and thanks for the frog photo Getty Images) the reason comes down to the solar system’s disparity with the Gregorian calendar.  A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days. So leap seconds – and leap years – are added as means of keeping our clocks (and calendars) in sync with the Earth and its seasons.
OK, so now you  AND I know!

Did you see Dave Grohl perform “Blackbird” (The Beatles) during the In Memoriam section of the Academy Awards last night? You can now.

Meanwhile, The Pulse Of Radio reports the Foo Fighters’ frontman discussed the band’s lack of drive to win more Grammys in an interview with CBS, transcribed by Alternative Nation.

It’s not as simple as a lack of ambition, though. Grohl just thinks it’s time for some new blood he says: “We’re the old guys. We root for the young ones. We don’t sit there and [angrily] think, ‘God, I hope I get another f**king Grammy!’ We’re like, ‘That Alabama Shakes record kicks a**.’ You root for the young ones coming up. A band like Alabama Shakes, they’re a good example, because they’ve been around for awhile.

Grohl continued his love letter to Alabama Shakes, who did win Best Alternative Music Album this year at the Grammys: “I’ve watched them go from the side stage of the festival, to headlining the side stage, to being on the main stage early in the day, to headlining, over 6 or 8 years, so they’ve been working hard. So they deserve everything they get. Killer band, it’s a great record. So for that kind of stuff, we’re excited for the younger bands.”

Dave really likes that band.  I brought them up when I asked him to comment on the state of rock music and the beating and belittling we tend to get as a viable radio format. Be listening for his answer tonight on hardDrive XL with Lou Brutus!

I love AC/DC.  And I love whoever this fan is who filmed this from Friday night in Houston, TX.   “Back In Black“….yeah!

Aw geez.  Seems this band can’t catch a break!  (No pun intended.) Eagles of Death Metal have cancelled the rest of their European tour after frontman Jesse Hughes  sustained an injury to his finger. The band made their live return to Paris on February 16th, following coordinated terrorist attacks in that city on Nov 13th, 2015 that killed 129 people, including 89 at their concert.

The last eight shows of their tour won’t happen. In a statement posted to Facebook, the band said: “Eagles of Death Metal has regrettably been forced to cancel the remainder of their European tour due to founder Jesse Hughes tearing a tendon in his finger. Hughes has tried to play through the injury during the current tour, but doctors have advised that the only way to properly heal it is to stop playing now, or risk further injury and having to cancel several weeks worth of shows.

The band is scheduled to play Reading and Leeds festivals later in the summer. Hughes released a statement regarding his injury as well, which reads in part: “I’m devastated that we cannot continue what has been a life-changing return to Europe, but I need to get repaired so we can continue to play rock music around this beautiful world, including coming back to Europe even stronger in the summer.”

Finally today, hit Road Rage for new tour dates for Iggy Pop.  His band is Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme on guitar/vocals,  Dean Fertita of Queens and The Dead Weather on guitar and keyboards, Matt Helders of Arctic Monkeys on drums, Queens/A Perfect Circle multi-instrumentalist Troy Van Leeuwen and guitarist/bassist Matt Sweeney.  Their Post Pop Depression album drops Mar 18th.
