July 27, 2010 The new album from Avenged Sevenfold, Nightmare, arrives in stores today, and as fans know, it marks the first effort without drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan, who passed away on December 9, 2009 from an accidental drug overdose. Once the band recovered from the shock of his death, they faced the task of finishing the record they had already started writing with Sullivan, and then they enlisted one of his favorite drummers to fill in: Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy. But even so, the band is not sure what the future holds.
"We're not sure what's going to happen after this touring cycle," lead singer M. Shadows told Billboard.com. "Our goal right now is to just get kids to hear the record, because we want them to remember the Rev."
However, Shadows does seem intent to stay on the road. "Our fan base stays with us, and it grows with each album too," he added. "Last time we went on the road, our audience jumped 40 percent... We go look at [Nielsen] SoundScan and we'll sell 8,000 records in a market, and when we play there, 14,000 people show up. We want to be like Slayer or Megadeth; those bands never sold tons and tons of albums, but they can tour forever and always have people come out."
Avenged Sevenfold has a handful of tour dates planned before kicking off the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival on August 17 in Minneapolis, along with Disturbed, Stone Sour, Halestorm, Hellyeah, Airbourne, Hail The Villain and New Medicine. The tour will wrap up the tour in Madison at the Alliant Energy Center on October 4th.
